The official date of oncology service
establishment in Georgia is 1946 when the Republican Oncology Dispancery was
opened in Tbilisi on 25 beds, with Hospice Clinic on 75 beds for chronis
cancer patients (Head Prof. Shotadze) and Oncology Department of doctors
Post - Graduate Study Institute (Head Prof. Konstantine Vepkhvadze).
In May 10, 1958 the Oncology Scientific
Institute of Georgian Ministry of Health (Director in 1958 1975 Prof.
Andro Gvemichava: in 1975 1977- Prof. Luarsab Sharashidze) was created on
the base of Republican Oncology Dispancery.
Radiology Scientific Institute (Director
in 1958 -1975 Prof. G. Nazarishvili; in 1975 1977 Prof. Revaz
Vepkhvadze - was opened in same year ( 1958).
Clinical Director of Oncology Scientific Center in 1977-1982 and Chief Oncologist of Republic of Georgia in 1965-1989 was Dr. Revi Chikhovani.
In 1977, the Oncology Scientific Center of Georgian Ministry of Health (Director in 1977-1989 Prof. Luarsab Sharashidze; in 1989 1996 Prof. Revaz Vepkhvadze) was estulished at Lisi Lake territory by joining of 5 medical centers (Oncology Scientific Institute, Radiology Scientific Institute, Republican Oncology Dispancery, Tbilisi Oncology Dispansery Radiology Concultation Out-Patient Clinic), reamed in 1997 as National Oncology Center of Georgian ministry of Health (Director Prof. Revaz Vepkhvadze and in 2000 as Auctionary Society Pro. A. Gvamichava National Center (Head of Advisory Board/ President in 2000 2001 - Prof. Revaz Vepkhvadze; Scince 2002 Prof. Revaz Gagua).
Due to stating the reforms in Georgian Health Care system and transition of National Cancer Center to self- funding, the main efforts of the Center in 1994-1995 were directed to preparation of reforms and to ensuring the organization- and methodology issues for their launching. Since May 1995, the creation of computer data base on patients entering In- and Out-patient clinics of the Center was started, with information standardization and archiving. All the diagnostic procedures and carried out treatment measures conducted at National Cancer Center In- and Out-patient Clinics are registering for each patient at the present time.
The hospital based computerized registry allowed the Center to transit to market type management with centralized organization. From this point of view the National Cancer Center the first organization among the large medical centers of Georgia in 1995-1996 with such type of management.
Since 1996, the National Cancer Center started therealisation of Primary Cancer Patients Out-patient Diagnosis State Program at Center Out-patient clinic, and since 1997 the Center Patients Treatment Program. The last is funding with cost- shearing by United Social Insurance State Found.
Along the complex examinations, the cancer patients are conducted the surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy at National Cancer Center. The unique super radical, as well as organ sparing, palliative and reconstructive surgeries are performed for all main cancer localizations. The specialized examination and treatment is carrying out for about 20.000 patients annual.
12 clinical departments, 2 out-patient clinics, 12 diagnostic departments and laboratories are functioning at the Center at the present time. The center is stuffed by high qualified specialists, among them: 29 Doctors of Medical Sciences, 65 Candidate of Medical Sciences, 8 State Prize Winners, and 10 members of International oncology organizations. The Oncology Departments of Tbilisi State Medical University (Head Prof. Ilia Backradze) and Doctors Post-Graduate Education Academy (Prof. Konstantine Mardaleishvili) are functioning at National Cancer Center.
10 NGOs have their offices at the Center: Prof. K. Vepkhvadze Georgian and Tbilisi Oncologists Society, Georgian Gynecologists- Oncologists (President- Prof. Levan Charkviani), Georgian Military Medical Academy (President Prof. Irakli Nadiradze). Georgian Medical Physicists Society (President- Doctor of Biology Sciences Eliso Gedevanishvili), Georgian Anti-Cancer foundation (Executive Director Levan Ramishvili), Tobacco Free Georgian Foundation (Head Candidate of Medical Sciences Temur Chachkhiani), Cancer Prevention Center (Director - Candidate of Medical Sciences Rema Gvamichava), National Association of Cancer Control, Caucasian Union Against Cancer, Health Promotion Alliance (President - Doctor of Medical Sciences Vasil Tkeshelashvili).
With its material- and technical base, high qualified stuff and intellectual potential, the National Cancer Center represents the leader scientific- and medical organization in the country. The scientific activities at the center are conducted to 3 directions: cancer epidemiology, cancer diagnosis and treatment and medical radiology. Besides the cancer patients diagnosis and treatment, the Cancer is coordinating the oncology service methodology- and organizational activities in the country.
In order to improve the cancer (cancer prevention, early diagnosis, adequate treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care) in Georgia, the medical specialists (oncologists, GPs and family doctors) training in oncology for raising their qualification, also the population cancer education is especially important.
Collaborating with NGOs, the National Cancer Center has started the population cancer education via the media means and realization of training programs, funded by Ministry of labor, Health and Social Affairs and different foundation as well.
The creation of information systems and first of all the Population Base Cancer Registry is the major priority of National Cancer Center. The Center has an internet access (first among the hospitals) since 1995. Since 1997 the National Cancer Center is the member of International Association of Cancer Control (IACR, Lion) and the Associate Member of European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR, Lion). The activities for establishing the information and communication systems in the county via the on-line connection are carrying out, which will make possible to reach the National Cancer Center initiative on Establishing the regional and international on-line information and communication connection between the medical and cancer centers, organization of regional and inter-countries consilliums and integration in international information system.
